In the work of debriefing and coaching, I am often reminded that the most meaningful moments happen in quiet spaces — when someone has the opportunity to pause, reflect, and be heard.

The Lenten season invites us into this same rhythm.  It is a time to pause, reflect, release, and prepare our hearts for renewal.  Lent gives permission to stop pretending everything is fine.  It creates space to notice what is unfinished, tender, or ready to shift.  Awareness is not failure — it is the doorway to growth.

Because of your partnership, I’ve been able to witness this kind of sacred space in many conversations recently. Here are a few glimpses.

Recently, facilitating a debrief with Angela, a pastor who has been faithfully serving the Lord and people for 38 years.  Like many in ministry, she carries both the joys and the weight of caring for others.  Our time together allowed her to reflect on the experiences that have shaped this last season of ministry.  She shared that being able to process out loud with someone who “gets it” felt like an act of grace toward herself.  During our conversation, Angela began to recognize how many losses had quietly stacked up over time and how heavy that had become — along with the fear of becoming stuck or paralyzed in the grief of it all.

Another debrief was with Jackie, a missionary serving in China, Taiwan and most recently in Thailand.  Jackie has heard about debriefing but has never experienced one herself so was curious about the process.  During our time together she shared about the rapid growth of their ministry, the deaths of her parents and a beloved mentor, her own health battle, and the challenges of navigating a difficult team transition. Much of her role has been pouring into others, so this debrief became a rare moment where she could speak honestly about her own struggles.  For a while, she was able to be the receiver of care rather than the giver.  Debriefing helps missionaries care for their own hearts so they can continue serving from a place of health and sustainability.

Another encouraging experience this month was providing debrief training for a missionary couple.  They recently received their own debrief and sensed how meaningful that process was for them.  As they move toward a pastoral care role within their ministry, we spent time exploring the principles and posture of debriefing — learning how listening well, asking thoughtful questions, and holding space can become powerful ways to care for fellow ministry workers.  I will continue mentoring them as they practice and grow more comfortable using these tools.

What a gift from the Lord, an in-person visit with Hannah, a Third Culture Kid (TCK) who is part of my small group through TCK Connect.  Her family is currently in the United States on furlough, and it was such a delight to finally meet face-to-face after connecting online for the last two years.  These moments are special reminders of the importance of community for TCKs, who often navigate complex layers of identity, belonging, and transition.

In addition to debriefing work, I continue to walk alongside coaching clients who are navigating significant life transitions.  One client in particular is currently discerning changes in her work and vocational direction.  Over the past weeks she has been taking thoughtful steps forward — exploring possibilities and moving at a pace that feels sustainable as she moves toward decisions that align with who she is and how she hopes to live.

Each of these moments reflects the heart of this ministry: creating safe spaces where people can connect, be nurtured, and grow in becoming.  And each one is something we are invited into with Jesus.  Our partnership makes it possible for pastors, missionaries, TCKs, and individuals in transition to receive care and encouragement along their journey.

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,

who for the joy set before him endured the cross,

scorning its shame,

and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:2

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Connect. Nurture. Grow. Thank you for your faithfulness in praying for this ministry.  Each debrief is a sacred invitation—a chance to step into someone’s story, even if only for a short stretch of the journey.  It feels a bit like being allowed to glimpse a painting still in progress.  We may not yet see the final picture, but we trust the One who promises to complete the good work He has begun until the day of Christ Jesus (Phil. 1:6). Recently, in an online debrief, the missionary shared: “ I am in a much better place since our initial meeting.  Taking the time to process my lived experience overseas and to grieve the losses, I now feel I have the capacity to move forward here in my new season of life. ” We also had the joy of walking alongside three third culture children. To see their eyes light up as their stories were received with understanding and care was priceless.  These children do not often have many who truly grasp their unique li...

SHANNON’S CORNER Be still. Be present. Behold. The prayer labyrinth is a journey that draws us closer to the heart of God with every step.  It’s a path where we listen, trust, and follow, knowing that He is always guiding us.  As we walk this path of prayer, we learn to recognize His voice, to lean into His presence, and to surrender to His direction.  It’s not just about where we’re going—it’s about who we’re walking with.  Lent this year has been a journey of walking inward toward the center of the labyrinth. Along the way, releasing my burdens to Jesus who is my beast of burden (Zec. 9:9), the One who carries what I cannot.  Arriving at the center, I find a resting place for my soul (Mt. 11:28-30) and resting in God’s loving embrace as He makes room for the new to spring up within me (Is. 43:18-19).  Now I’m journeying out of the labyrinth with the anointing of His presence and with an overflowing cup (Ps 23:5). Such an honor a...
