SHANNON’S CORNER
Let’s be People of Remembrance.
The Season of Lent is a time to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits and remember all that Yahweh did for His people as we journey to Holy Week, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. I am enjoying participating in the She Reads Truth People of Remembrance Bible reading plan for Lent. Who Yahweh is and what he had done for his people. Yahweh’s with-ness with his people is what has really spoken to me so far in this first week of Lent.
How delightful and such an enjoyment to be invited by One Mission Society Church Partners to facilitate a training on partner care team at Dubois Lakeside Church. The training was on the importance and need for churches to care for their global workers in partnership with the mission agency and to care for the US-based missionaries. Bringing an awareness through building a foundation for care, defining the word missionary and global worker, and how to form a Care Team and their roles and responsibilities. We had three churches represented and OMS. If you are interested in how your church can receive this training, please contact me.
Have you ever wondered if we hear and learn messages that we received in order to pass along? Recently, I have been wondering this. It kind of reminds me of Faith Promise in that we pass the message along that we received to give to another. In my women’s Bible study, I first heard this message and I have been pondering about what was taught about the narrative. Then, about a week later it was spoken in my women’s leadership cohort through a different lens, honor and shame.
The narrative of the woman who bled for 12 years, (Mt. 9:20-22; Mk 5:25-34; Lk 8:43-48), I am paraphrasing. What is the thing we are struggling with for years to be cured or to find wholeness? She went to many doctors to help, and they made it worse for her. What have we tried or who have we sought out to make our situation or circumstance better and yet it made things worse? The physical, emotional, and mental ailments that appeared from her bleeding for twelve years, the societal rejection, isolation, and shame because of her bleeding – ‘being unclean.’ How has your struggle manifested itself or impacted your life? The woman heard Jesus was nearby and believed that if she could just touch the hem of his garment she would be healed. She did manage to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment and she felt her bleeding stop and was immediately healed. Jesus was on his way to heal another girl who was sick, and he stopped when he felt power leave him. He asked, “Who touched me?” The crowd was massive and pressing in all around and yet Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” Jesus invited the woman out of a place of shame and isolation into a place of honor and connection. The woman could have stayed in the shadow of the crowd, but she came forward, fell at Jesus’ feet, and told her whole story. Jesus listened. He was attentive. Afterwards, Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” (Mark 5:34). This is the only time Jesus calls someone Daughter in the Bible. The woman, ‘Daughter’ is known, wanted, belongs, cherished, secure, seen, heard, cared, and protected by her Father, Jesus. What a beautiful moment of restoration. Jesus is inviting us out of a place of shame and isolation and into a place of honor and connection. Are you willing to step forward and share your whole story with Jesus?
A global worker couple who is on home assignment waiting for their next assignment to begin decided to take some time to debrief their years serving in two countries in Asia. As they were sharing their stories, the Holy Spirit put on my heart to share the above message with them. This passage of Scripture resonated with the couple that we discussed it more the next day. Their biggest takeaway from the debrief was Jesus inviting them to a place of honor and not to stay in a place of shame.
The Women’s Leadership Cohort has been a real treat as I have gotten to know some of these amazing women leaders and learn from and with them on developing our leadership by integrating character, capacity, and competency. There are many walks of life represented in our group from a wide variety of backgrounds and leadership styles. We are halfway through our eight-session cohort: 1) Growing in wisdom and stature before God and man, 2) Imposter syndrome and effects of shame when leading, 3) Leading at times of high stress and crisis, and 4) Taking the next right step. Some quick takeaways for me are Jesus had to go through a process of maturing (12y/o – 30y/o); shame fuels imposter syndrome and one of the antidotes for shame is honor; what contingency plans do you need to have as a leader to build up reserves inside to give capacity when in crisis; you only behave in a crisis the way you’ve trained for it.
We are so close to the finish line of $40,000. The amount still needed is $6,600. We’ve got this! Will you help me to cross the finish line?
