SHANNON’S CORNER
With God at the helm, 2024 will be incredible!
Starting in December with the encouragement of my sister, I have put effort into thinking through and writing down four long-term goals for the year. The word that keeps coming to mind is consistency.
It was such a delight to be able to provide care for a family who was finishing their time in the Philippines. It was special since I debriefed the kids two years ago and now the opportunity to reconnect and see how they are doing. We reviewed some concepts and activities we did before and added some new activities because of the season of life they are currently entering.
Recently, I helped to provide care for a family who are in the states for a year on furlough. As a family they are facing many life transitions with aging parents, will be leaving their young adult son behind, and when back in Chile, they will be living in a different region. Providing the teens with a safe space to share their stories and to have intentional time to process how their experiences impacted them. In addition, brainstorming with the older son to think big picture and some steps to take towards establishing himself in the US was a little overwhelming to him and his parents and eye opening.
TCK Connect started back up for the semester. It was great to see some new students who attended and hearing how Christmas break went for them. We had a family that ended moving back to their host country quickly. Another family has decided that later this year they’ll be moving back to the US. The leaders talked through how many of the students will be transitioning this year as we have some high school seniors who will be attending college next year and those students who will be moving back to US or to their host country. Seeing this need, we are going to have some breakout groups to talk through these life changing transitions.
There is not much care from mission organizations in helping their missionaries to re-enter the US except to offer a debrief, have them read a book on re-entry, and possibly with the help of supporters who continue to give financially for one to three months as they transition. Many are unaware of the re-entry process, the challenges faced, and the length of time re-entry can take. Re-entry starts during the decision process of terminating your time in your host country to return to your passport country. The length of time to fully be reintegrated, readjusted to be settled, find belonging and community, and living purposefully can be daunting as it can take up to ten years with the average being between three to five years.
If you are interested in learning more for yourself, your church, or for the global workers you know who are or will be entering the re-entry process…Let’s chat!
