SHANNON’S CORNER

Connect. Nurture. Grow.

The breathtaking Himalayas greeted us each day—rugged, vast, and full of awe.  Their majesty reminded me of the greatness of our God, and yet this same God longs for an intimate relationship with each one of us. How good and amazing He is.

From the moment Kristi invited us to join the team, she emphasized the importance of flexibility—because in South Asia, plans rarely go as expected!  One teammate called it “organized chaos.”  Yet even in the many shifts and surprises, God moved in powerful ways.

During our time there, we:

Debriefed two couples and three third culture kids.

Shared meals with other missionaries and families.

Enjoyed coffee with several of Kristi’s local friends and the guest house owner.

Facilitated a mini-retreat for a missionary and our team.

Hosted a retreat with about 25 missionaries and nationals.

Offered eight prayer appointments during the retreat.

Many nationals shared that they had never experienced Jesus in worship this deeply before.  They longed for meaningful connection with Him.  One young man shared how he encountered Jesus through a Visio Divina prayer station while reflecting on an image of the deep ocean.  During one prayer time, a woman arrived weighed down with burdens—but as we guided her into imaginative prayer with Jesus, we watched her body relax and her spirit rest.

While Kristi and Jeremy watched the youngest brother, I had the privilege of spending time with the two oldest brothers while their parents enjoyed a coffee date.  We talked about emotions as a language that helps us understand what’s happening inside us.  They created “emotion buckets” and practiced identifying 12 emotions in their bodies, learning simple strategies to support themselves when feelings felt uncomfortable.  The next day, the older boy felt homesick for Texas.  He took out his emotion bucket, found the sadness card, and turned the card over to see what he had written: “Talk to Jesus.”  So, he and his parents did just that.  What a beautiful moment of emotional awareness, spiritual connection, and co-regulation for the whole family.

One missionary shared her early-days story.  Shortly after arriving in August, she became very sick with giardia and once better, looked for a quiet place to rest.  She attempted to book rooms at two hotels, but both attempts fell through—including one moment when she suddenly couldn’t recall the last digits of her credit card.  She later booked a different hotel—and during her stay, protests erupted citywide and the two hotels she originally tried to reserve were burned down.  She would have been there had the Lord not gently redirected her steps.  His protection was unmistakable.

We also visited both a Hindu temple and a Buddhist temple, helping us better understand the spiritual life shaping the culture.  As someone with cross-cultural training, I love noticing how God leaves His imprint in every culture and belief system.  It was remarkable to see symbolic echoes of the Trinity—three main deities in Hinduism and unity represented through three eyes in Buddhism.

One personal update: since April, my car’s check-engine light has turned on eight times.  Right before this trip, it came on again.  After another diagnostic at the dealership today, I learned it needs a new transmission—far more costly than the car is worth.  So, I’ll be shopping for a new (used) vehicle soon.  I would deeply appreciate your prayers for wisdom, provision, and guidance as I look for something safe and reliable.

Life Transitions Coaching with Shannon:

The Christian Life Coach Network recently referred a young adult to me.  She was seeking clarity around her purpose, especially as it relates to working with children.  Through our coaching session, she gained insight into her calling and identified new opportunities to explore.

Often, it’s not the “big aha moments” that change us—but the gentle, meaningful shifts that move us steadily toward who God created us to be.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”          – Romans 15:13

SHANNON’S CORNER Winter Blast… Brr. It’s cold outside.  Winter is not a favorite season for many people, but I love winter. There is a beauty in the dormant, snow covered, and coldness of winter that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our bones.  It reminds me of the Lord’s love that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our heart and soul.  The snow brings a smile to my face as I delight in the quietness, calming, beautifying, and a slower pace.  Recently, I was talking with someone in Louisiana who was going to be making a snowman and snow angel with his granddaughter.  What playfulness and awe to experience the Lord’s beauty. Community is so important to our lives that even the Lord noticed how alone Adam was in the garden that He made Eve.  It is where you are seen, known, and find belonging.  It has been something I have prayed for, asked you all to be praying for, have sought after in ...

SHANNON’S CORNER Connect. Nurture. Grow. An unexpected and unplanned trip led me to see God’s marvelous and wonderful work at the Assist Pregnancy Center. I learned from the staff that this pregnancy center is unique and different in that the population they serve are women who come already with an 85-90% decision made of aborting their babies. The medical staff who are in the rooms with the women during their ultrasounds share Jesus with them and are compassionate witnesses to each baby as they are seen, valued, and loved. If the mother decides to have the baby the center walks alongside with the mother and family. I had the precious privilege to facilitate a training with all the staff of the pregnancy center to talk about the Wounds from the Work.  Listening to their stories of how the Lord called them to work at this pregnancy center and what the cost has been to them, and their families was sacred ground.  Creating a safe place for them to be seen and heard in thei...

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...
