SHANNON’S CORNER
Connect. Nurture. Grow.
Cherry Run Camp is like being embraced with a soft, comfy-cozy blanket. It is my happy place. A place where I find connection, where my well-being is nurtured, and how I grow more into becoming – the Lord’s will be done in me.
It was such a delight to connect with so many of you at camp. I was overjoyed with the privilege of being one of the bible teachers for the youth. Together we did a deep dive into the meaning behind the Lord’s Prayer that we often recite but do we truly know, understand, and take to heart what we are reciting? At the end of the week, I ended up injuring my right foot rushing up the stairs to the sound booth, so I have been in a boot and using crutches as my foot heals.
Experiencing God’s kindness through the thoughtfulness and hands of both those who I know, and strangers as I traveled to San Antonio, TX, my time there, and my travel home was incredible and humbling. It reminded me of the parable of the Good Samaritan where I was the one beaten and robbed and how God used many to come and tend to my needs like the Good Samaritan.
The World Indigenous Missions Conference was held in the beautiful hill country of TX at Mo-Ranch. Ashley, my assistant, and I were privileged to serve together and minister to 27 youth from the ages of 11 to 18, representing six countries and four U.S. states. Our mission was to connect, nurture, and grow the youth where they are in their journey by them feeling seen, heard, understood, and knowing that they are not alone and equipping them with tools to continue their journey for years to come. Here are some takeaways the youth shared of our time together:
"I felt like I have found my people this week. I do not have to explain myself; they just get me." - 13-year-old TCK
"I loved that we broke into smaller groups during the evening sessions and talked about friendships and transitions. What I wished though happened that didn't was a clear, defined answer about friendships and about transitions." - 18-year-old TCK
"I really like this RAFT concept in how to say healthy goodbyes as I do not like saying goodbyes at all." - 17-year-old TCK
Continuing to meet with and care for a young missionary who is re-entering back into life here in the U.S. Recently, she has been sharing about some of what she is experiencing after now going to a new church and starting her new job that now things are hitting her strongly. “I have been crying every day this week and I am more anxious and stressed.” She is in reverse culture shock where she’s no longer in the honeymoon phase but entering the disenchanted phase where things start to become annoying and irritating because of feeling out of sync and noticing that things here are just different. Moving back is harder than what most people think, because you assume that because you are from here, the U.S., that you’ve got this. It’s thinking that you do know when in reality you don’t know because you don’t know how the U.S. has changed in your absence and you don’t know how you have changed while being gone so you are caught off guard by it all…reverse culture shock.
Recently, I met with a young couple online to debrief their first-term serving in Estonia. They have encountered many big life changes that have made these last three years complex. They have faced setbacks of disappointments and disillusionment and have had to hold both the grief of loved ones dying and the blessing of their firstborn. They are now in the U.S. taking time to heal and decide what the Lord’s will is for their family. Over the next few weeks, we will continue to meet and process through their losses, acknowledging God’s kindnesses, and thinking through what the next right step for them is to take.
Life Transitions Coaching with Shannon:
Our God is a God of order, not chaos. The law of process means having a plan that becomes a way to align our lives with God’s nature. A plan gives us a clear sense of where we are going. It helps us identify and prioritize what’s truly important, allowing us to live with intentionality rather than being reactive to circumstances. A plan is a form of good stewardship for our resources, time, and talents. Working the plan demonstrates faith and responsibility. It is an act of trust that the orderly steps we are taking, however small, are part of a larger, divinely orchestrated purpose. It’s a way of co-laboring with God to bring about His purposes in our lives and the world. As your coach, I help ensure that your plan moves you forward with confidence and purpose.
