 SHANNON’S CORNER

Raise up the heat!

July has been hot, hot, hot! It has been a hot month for providing care through debriefs.  Three family debriefs with kids ranging from five to fifteen years old along with a one-year-old and two individual online debriefs. Plus facilitating one member care training in-person and one online transitional stress training. The countries that have been served just this month are Uganda, Denmark, Malaysia, Togo, Indonesia, Panama, USA, and Bangladesh.

It is truly amazing to be a small part in caring for the kids and teenagers and many times it is trying to give them back their voice, power, and relationship that has been stolen, shut down, or broken because of their experiences, relationships, and transitions they find themselves in.  Our personhood is made up of our voice – our identity, essence, the expression of who I am; our power – choice, options, our self-control, our limits, and responsibilities; and our relationship – interpersonal connections, connection with our community, world, life, and work.  Each debrief is unique and different just as each person and family are unique and different.

One individual expressed that her season has been like the ocean – the depth of her grief from all her losses and the beauty and calmness it speaks to her. One mom shared that her son started using some of the emotion vocabulary that we worked on and used throughout our days together.  This is a big first step, having vocabulary to be able to process.  Some sisters were able to share some hard parts of their story as they broke pottery and glued it into something beautiful on a piece of canvas.  Some kids were able to identify where they were in the journey of grief after using the map for the journey of grief and finding all the stations and experiencing what that station of grief feels like and learning some tools, they can do to help support them as they journey through grief.  You can’t go over it. You can’t go under it. You must go through it.  Trusting Jesus in the process.

Equipping people to come alongside of others and to care for them where they are in their journey is such a joy.  How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news (Rom. 10:15b).  It was refreshing and joyful to help equip a woman who is from Panama and served in Indonesia and is now helping to mobilize and care for her organization’s global workers.  As I got to hear parts of her story serving in Indonesia and of her re-entry process back to Panama and now her hopes for better equipping her fellow global workers and providing care for them is truly special and amazing.  In our time together I got to learn from her and glean insight into some of her challenges and difficulties in her re-entry journey.  How amazing that we are invited to partner with Jesus on mission in the work that he is already doing in people’s lives!

Cherry Run Camp

Camp meeting starts July 27th until August 4th. It is not too late to come and join us for the week, for some days and/or evening services. I am the resident missionary this summer. This year, I am so excited to not only share what the Lord has been preparing in my heart to share with the youth, with the children, with the adults about missions, how we are all invited to partner with Jesus on mission AND also to hear testimonies of how the Lord is moving in people’s lives.  Tuesday morning from 9:30am-10:30am in the Dining Hall I will be having a session with adults and sharing about some of the challenges pastor’s kids and missionary’s kids have.  Missions day is all day Thursday and I will be speaking for both worship services at 11am and 7pm.  I would love to see you and chat with you so come on down to Cherry Run Camp.  You do not want to miss out!

If you are not able to make it, many of the services are streamed live on Cherry Run Camp’s Facebook page.  Dr. Caleb Friedeman and Rev. Jimmy Swogger will be our evangelists for the week, check out the schedule.

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Camp News! Cherry Run Camp is my green pasture and quiet waters where the Lord continuously restores my soul.  This camp was even more special as I was invited to be the missionary in residence for the nine days of camp. Sharing with all age groups about missions and how as believers and followers of Christ we are all called to go and make disciples by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. It was a week that was fulfilling to be with my family and the family of God as we fellowshipped one with another. As missionaries, we first need to make connections and build relationships with people before sharing the Good News. The youth were given the mission to level up: 1) make connection by introducing themselves to people and making them feel welcomed; 2) ask the person what they need prayer for; 3) the youth to pray with the person on the spot; 4) the youth to share their testimony; and 5) the person is asked to share their testimony.  The yo...

SHANNON’S CORNER Winter Blast… Brr. It’s cold outside.  Winter is not a favorite season for many people, but I love winter. There is a beauty in the dormant, snow covered, and coldness of winter that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our bones.  It reminds me of the Lord’s love that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our heart and soul.  The snow brings a smile to my face as I delight in the quietness, calming, beautifying, and a slower pace.  Recently, I was talking with someone in Louisiana who was going to be making a snowman and snow angel with his granddaughter.  What playfulness and awe to experience the Lord’s beauty. Community is so important to our lives that even the Lord noticed how alone Adam was in the garden that He made Eve.  It is where you are seen, known, and find belonging.  It has been something I have prayed for, asked you all to be praying for, have sought after in ...
