 SHANNON’S CORNER

New Growth!

The trees are budding, flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the grass is displaying many luscious colors of green. The beauty of spring – new growth.

This year has been growth for me as well. The Lord has been working in me to regain and use my voice that was lost during this season of transition. This transition for me has been like an air plant trying to find where I can attach myself to in order to hopefully grow deeper roots. One way I believe the Lord gave me an opportunity to use my voice was the field visit to the Dominican Republic without my colleague, Bethann. Another Safe Place teammate went with me to minister to the Kids Alive DR team through a retreat and one-on-one care. I felt my confidence returning and my teammate also shared how she could see my confidence building each day as well. While in the DR, I got to see a former missionary and briefly hear how God was working in her and her family’s lives.

My colleague, Mark and I helped to facilitate an in-person mediation meeting between three team members one morning. As a mediator, I’m responsible in creating a safe place for the two parties to be able to be heard, seen, and understood and hopefully the two parties will come to an agreement. The hope is that their will be reconciliation and restoration of relationship. And knowing that everyone involved can only do what is theirs to do. Even though it can be a hard place to be and remain neutral, I am grateful for the opportunity to walk with these individuals and continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to do his work in their lives. Another opportunity the Lord gave me to use my voice as I was the main facilitator for the in-person session.

Spending three days in a lake house located in the Poconos to facilitate a personal debrief was a lovely solitary place. Jesus would get away to a solitary place to connect with the Father. Debriefs can be a way to get away from distractions to connect with the Father.  This time of debrief the hope was to help bring closure with the missionary team and mission organization, how to deal with unresolved conflict, and to look forward to the next steps with her new mission organization. It is such a joy to get to participate and be a witness to how God is working and speaking into people’s lives, bringing clarity, understanding, and kindness as He leads them towards wholeness.

The transition connection group has been such a joy to walk with, support, and encourage these six ladies who are in a transition season. Some of them have re-entered their passport country, some have changed roles and positions, and one is in a holding pattern waiting for her husband to get his visa. Each week there has been a theme that we talk about from our perspectives and lived experiences and just where we are in the transition, change, identity, tending, and getting to know what a day in our life is like. We are women who pour out into the lives of others—our teammates, our children, our ministry partners, our neighbors. But it can be challenging to open up space for God’s gracious tending of our own souls. As plants are moved to a new place or even just a new pot, their needs might change. What are some of the ways you feel your spiritual life has changed or shifted through different seasons and locations? In your place and current season, what is helping your spiritual health, helping you rest in God’s care? I have been encouraged as well by these ladies and learning from them.

The Women’s Leadership Cohort has come to an end. It was a wonderful time to learn with other women leaders from all walks of life and to learn from so many guest speakers. I personally learned a lot and grew from what was shared. A big take away was trusting Jesus in the process, taking the next right step, and expectations.

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.”

Psalm 23:5

Table represents nourishment, provision, strength, and has established boundaries. This is what the Lord not only prepares for us but is also present with us in the presence of our enemies, distractions, overwhelm, anxieties, etc. Sheep would beat their heads trying to get relief from gnats and flies. The shepherd would put oil on the sheep’s head to give comfort, calm, and peace to the sheep. This is what our Good Shepherd does with his oil to bring calm and peace to our lives from the anxieties and overwhelm and chaos in our lives.

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Be still. Be present. Behold. The prayer labyrinth is a journey that draws us closer to the heart of God with every step.  It’s a path where we listen, trust, and follow, knowing that He is always guiding us.  As we walk this path of prayer, we learn to recognize His voice, to lean into His presence, and to surrender to His direction.  It’s not just about where we’re going—it’s about who we’re walking with.  Lent this year has been a journey of walking inward toward the center of the labyrinth. Along the way, releasing my burdens to Jesus who is my beast of burden (Zec. 9:9), the One who carries what I cannot.  Arriving at the center, I find a resting place for my soul (Mt. 11:28-30) and resting in God’s loving embrace as He makes room for the new to spring up within me (Is. 43:18-19).  Now I’m journeying out of the labyrinth with the anointing of His presence and with an overflowing cup (Ps 23:5). Such an honor a...

SHANNON’S CORNER Connect. Nurture. Grow. Thank you for your faithfulness in praying for this ministry.  Each debrief is a sacred invitation—a chance to step into someone’s story, even if only for a short stretch of the journey.  It feels a bit like being allowed to glimpse a painting still in progress.  We may not yet see the final picture, but we trust the One who promises to complete the good work He has begun until the day of Christ Jesus (Phil. 1:6). Recently, in an online debrief, the missionary shared: “ I am in a much better place since our initial meeting.  Taking the time to process my lived experience overseas and to grieve the losses, I now feel I have the capacity to move forward here in my new season of life. ” We also had the joy of walking alongside three third culture children. To see their eyes light up as their stories were received with understanding and care was priceless.  These children do not often have many who truly grasp their unique li...
