CAMP...DEBRIEFING...LIFE COACHING...

 SHANNON’S CORNER

Excited anticipation.  Homecoming.  Full.

These words describe Cherry Run Camp.  The weeks and months leading up to Cherry Run with excited anticipation of what the nine days will hold, the many people who will be there, any new camp adventures that will occur, and what the Lord will teach me.  It is a place that has been a constant in my life that no matter where I live in the world, I always have Cherry Run to look forward to.  Camp can be tiring but it is a time and place for me to recharge and refuel.  Arriving empty or almost and leaving full.

Why Cherry Run Camp?  It is a family camp that has something for everyone in the family.  It is also welcoming to any youth, young adult, individual or couple who are able to come and participate.  Camp is a place to learn and live out your Christian life in a community of believers.  A place where you can find belonging.  Mark your calendars for next summer as camp starts July 27th-Aug 4th 2024.

Faith of a mustard seed.

The missionaries at Cherry Run Camp, JT and Heather Greer who serve with World Gospel Mission in Texas, shared a story of a child who prayed for his favorite cereal that the food pantry would have for the next distribution so that his family would receive it.  And at the next food distribution, that exact cereal was delivered.  This story made me think of the situation with the Cherry Run water and to pray specifically for the water to be purified just like the waters of Marah that were bitter became sweet.  The Israelites grumbled and complained to Moses, and he prayed, and God had Moses put a tree in the water to make the bitter water sweet.  Throughout the years, many of us campers have been grumbling and complaining about the Cherry Run water that one day a group of campers prayed over the well where we get our water for God to make the water sweet like He did for the Israelites so long ago.  I am eagerly anticipating how God is going to answer our prayer for the water at Cherry Run Camp.

I had nine junior high youth (12–14-year-old) in my bible study class for six days of camp.  They were such a delight, engaging, and so much fun to not only teach them but also to learn from them.  Most mornings, I had the youth drawing something that went along with the passage of Scripture we read and as they shared what they drew I gleaned insight that made me see things differently and to ponder on more.  I also had a fun afternoon at the kids’ mission for minute on Thursday to read the book, Swirly with the kids.  Then I had the kids use blue and yellow play dough to see how much Cherry Run Camp is integrated into their home lives like a missionary kid’s two different cultures can be integrated and sometimes makes a completely different color altogether.  Their beautiful creations with the play dough were all so different and unique.

Debriefing never looks the same even if you use many of the same tools because everyone’s story is different and how it impacts them is also very different.  Trusting God in the process of the debrief that He will continue to unstack the blocks that need unstacking.  We had a family debrief with a siblings group made of three teens and a kid who served in China for many years.  It was a challenging debrief for me as it took longer to make a connection with the kids as two of them were skeptical coming in.  And I was challenged with how I handled some of the things they said.  But with lots of prayer and trusting God in the process I was able to connect and provide a safe place for these kids to start processing some of their hurts.  I was able to help facilitate another in-person debrief with a couple who had finished up their time of preparations and soon to be going to serve in Indonesia.  And facilitating three online debriefs, two were finishing up their time serving with their mission to continue with another mission organization.  Those debriefs showed me God’s kindness in protecting his children even when maybe we are not able to see it in the moment.  How God is always moving even when we cannot see it or sense it or feel him moving especially when he seems silent or distant.

News regarding Christian Life Coaching.  I have revamped my blog as I will be blogging three times a month to give valuable content regarding transitions and grief & loss and posting the blog posts in Facebook.  In trying to get the word out about my services as a Christian Life Coach through Safe Place Ministry, I have posted in the Global Member Care Network Facebook group and to the Cuidado Integral en Latinoameria Facebook group.  Velvet Ashes will soon be adding my Christian Life Coaching services onto their resource page for global women (missionary women).  I need your help with any referrals of anyone needing coaching services and/or how my Christian Life Coaching service could be listed on people’s/organization’s/church’s resource page.  I would be so grateful and appreciative for your help in spreading the word.

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Camp News! Cherry Run Camp is my green pasture and quiet waters where the Lord continuously restores my soul.  This camp was even more special as I was invited to be the missionary in residence for the nine days of camp. Sharing with all age groups about missions and how as believers and followers of Christ we are all called to go and make disciples by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. It was a week that was fulfilling to be with my family and the family of God as we fellowshipped one with another. As missionaries, we first need to make connections and build relationships with people before sharing the Good News. The youth were given the mission to level up: 1) make connection by introducing themselves to people and making them feel welcomed; 2) ask the person what they need prayer for; 3) the youth to pray with the person on the spot; 4) the youth to share their testimony; and 5) the person is asked to share their testimony.  The yo...

SHANNON’S CORNER I will be joining my team with Refresh & Resound International as we will be in Penang, Malaysia.  Some of the team will be doing worship and the rest of us will be providing care and prayer for the spiritual leaders’ retreat and conference for around 220 global workers who work in translating the Scriptures in SE Asia.  Please be in prayer for my team as well as for everyone at these events.  I will share with you more next month so stay tuned. I have so enjoyed the slower pace this month and the opportunity to finish all of my nursing continuing education classes as well as some life coaching continuing education.  The slower pace has also given me time to be able to pause and reflect on this past summer and check-in with myself.  There have been some things that surfaced to the top of some transition losses that I needed to acknowledge, process, and grieve them.  God gently reminding me that I am still in the season of re-entr...
