SHANNON’S CORNER
Remembering that our freedom comes at a cost, a ransom. Thankful for all the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms I have as an American! Grateful for the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for the freedom from sin and death I have in Him and eternal life!
Safe Place Ministry has celebrated eight years this month. It is so delightful to be able to partner and serve with the Safe Place team. Being able to have fun and laugh together, sharing and consulting with one another, and a leadership team that seeks the Lord in all things. One of the fun activities we did as a team was to come up with a flag to represent Safe Place. This is the depiction of my team’s flag that we did.
A few of the missionaries who I have been ministering to since near the beginning of the year have finished their sessions with me recently. One signed up for a care package which includes a three hour debrief and six 50-minute sessions to process through what had happened in her ministry as it had to close due to safety issues. She was in shock and paralyzed in grief that kept accumulating. But God met her in that grief. She experienced His gentleness and lovingkindness. It was truly amazing to hear the various things of how God brought her through this hard and difficult journey of grieving. Even though she has not finished this journey, but she is no longer stuck but moving forward in healing and where God is leading her next. Trusting in His faithfulness and goodness.
I always love it when I get to do in-person sessions as I connect with people in a different way than I do virtually. One in-person session was spending the day at Water Street Mission in Lancaster to have one-on-one member care sessions with a handful of their employees. The other in-person session was a family debrief with four teenagers. One of the activities we did together with the family was an emotional web. As we share some fun facts to get to know one another we are making a web with yarn. It helps to produce trust within the group as they share their stories. The web is a visual just like a spider web catches things, our web is to catch their hearts. Knowing that there is connection and safety when sharing their stories.
During the summer months I have started attending a women’s bible study. My main reason was to meet more ladies from the church I am attending. We are studying the book, ‘All That’s Good: Recovering the Lost Art of Discernment’ by Hannah Anderson. Hannah states, “The goal of discernment is not to simply avoid the evil in this life; it is to learn what is good so that we might embrace and enjoy it.” The book talks about cultivating a life of discernment and focuses on Philippians 4:8 as how to cultivate discernment, “…whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable…”
Two Sundays, I have had the privilege to serve in The Well ministry at the church as a volunteer. This is the youth ministry at Living Water Community Church. One of the middle school girls in my group loves to rap and is creative in writing songs. I gave her the word, “forgiveness” as that was our lesson that day and right on the spot she came up with a rap on forgiveness. It was truly amazing to hear and see how God has gifted her and she is using this gift for the Lord. She shared that the youth are going on a mission’s trip to Myrtle Beach (middle schoolers) and Pawley Island (high schoolers). This is her first time going on a mission’s trip she is excited and scared and looking forward to working with the kids in the VBS that they will be doing.
One weekend in July, I got to visit with my friend, Fanny and her family who live in Virginia. It has been six years since we’ve seen one another in-person. I got to meet her two little girls for the first time, Faith (5) and Bethany (2). It was fun to catch up with one another and to just hang out and being called ‘Tia’ (aunt) by her two girls. A weekend of mostly speaking Spanish and Spanglish which was a lot of fun. Fanny made plans for us to meet in Roanoke with some other Peruvian friends who were passing through at a Peruvian restaurant. I got to see Javier, Jessica, and Kiyari their 19-month-old and Nancy. I met Javier at the children’s home in Lima and Jessica had come on teams and later was a teacher at the one school in Lima before I left. So, to see them married and their little girl was so delightful as I have not seen them since I left Peru 11 years ago. Nancy is a missionary in Peru and has been involved with the children’s home since it began. It was great to reconnect with her as well as I have not seen her since our friend’s wedding 10 years ago. The fun of good friendship, good food, and a lot of laughter was very lifegiving to me.

fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
