HE IS RISEN INDEED!

 SHANNON’S CORNER

Jesus is risen.  He is risen indeed!

Lent and Easter season is a favorite time of year for me since childhood.  I had two churches, the Dayton UM and the Rimersburg UM that helped form my need in preparing my heart, mind, and body to receive what Jesus did for me and continues to do for me.  The celebration of Holy Week, services each night leading up to Resurrection Sunday.  The lent youth breakfasts that helped to think through the preparation leading up to Holy Week and on through to Resurrection Sunday.  This Lent, I enjoyed reading the book of Ezekiel – with the theme, ‘Come to Life’ by She Reads Truth.

Transition painting of a TCK

A family finished sixteen years of serving in SE Asia to come back to serve the Lord here in the USA.  I had the privilege of serving and ministering to their two children, nine and twelve years old.  We talked about the sadness they feel in leaving behind their home and friends and the transition to live here in American culture.

Bethann and I facilitated a training on Transitional Stress with the students and staff of OneLife Institute in Morris, PA.  In the book, ‘Transition Companion’ by Tim Austin, he says, “Transformation is the destination for transition.”  A timely discussion on processing transitions as they had all just recently arrived back from a mission trip to Peru and Kenya.  Equipping them with tools as they navigate the transition of leaving OneLife in May and many more of life’s transitions.

Where are you right now? (Reflection)

I debriefed a couple before they soon leave to go back to North Africa.  They were back in the states because of the sudden health decline and death of a loved one.  Giving them a safe space to grieve freely, to start processing through their time lived overseas, and tools to help them navigate and manage this time of loss and grief as they go back to serve others.

Root System of a TCK
I ministered to a number of women and men globally as far away as Papa New Guinea, to SE Asia, to Denmark, to Dominican Republic, to Peru, to North Africa, to Canada, to the USA – New York, Florida, Indiana, Lancaster and Harrisburg, PA.  It is a privilege to get to hear their stories, what they are learning, and to see God’s hand working in their lives.  Each one has experienced suffering and loss from loss of home, ministry, friends, loved ones, relationship conflicts, sickness, being misunderstood, lack of confidence, feelings of being inadequate, and “who am I?” and joy and peace of God’s kindnesses, faithfulness, health, provision, finishing well, saying good-byes, and being heard and understood.

Jars of Clay

Enjoying my women’s Bible study every Thursday evening as we continue to study prayer.  Learning from our Lord as he taught his disciples how to pray, intercessory prayer, and persevering in prayer.

The joy of being with family.  The excitement of watching Rylie hitting a home run.  Rylie and Morgan participating in a double play to end the inning.  Doing a road trip from Harrisburg to Grove City with Jack and Theo as they had a road trip scavenger hunt to keep them busy as well as some tasty stops along the way.

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances. You will live in the land that I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.”

Ezekiel 36:26-28

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Connect. Nurture. Grow. Thank you for your faithfulness in praying for this ministry.  Each debrief is a sacred invitation—a chance to step into someone’s story, even if only for a short stretch of the journey.  It feels a bit like being allowed to glimpse a painting still in progress.  We may not yet see the final picture, but we trust the One who promises to complete the good work He has begun until the day of Christ Jesus (Phil. 1:6). Recently, in an online debrief, the missionary shared: “ I am in a much better place since our initial meeting.  Taking the time to process my lived experience overseas and to grieve the losses, I now feel I have the capacity to move forward here in my new season of life. ” We also had the joy of walking alongside three third culture children. To see their eyes light up as their stories were received with understanding and care was priceless.  These children do not often have many who truly grasp their unique li...

SHANNON’S CORNER Connect. Nurture. Grow. Building connection and trust are important in any relationship and especially when wanting to create a safe place for people to share and process their stories. Sometimes with kids and teens it can take a bit of time to foster those connections and trust. A question that is implied is, “Are you safe to share my story with?” Often it is through play these connections are built. Both families who I debriefed serve in Uganda, they serve with different organizations in the capital of Kampala, and both families are in transition. The one sibling group were ages 3, 6, and 8 years old and as I worked with them, I was able to apply some of the principles I learned in play processing. The other sibling group were ages 5, 7, 13, and 14 years old which was a bit of a challenge for me with the large age span. The main thing for all of them was saying goodbye to friends who have come and gone while they were the ones “left behind”, and for the one sib...
