Happy New Year 2022!

 SHANNON’S CORNER

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I got to bring in 2022 with all my family except for Rachel’s family as they were sick.  The new year is a time of new beginnings and for many goals setting for the new year.  I have set some goals for myself this year but like to think of them as desires more so than goals.

Last year at a women’s conference one of the speakers spoke on goals and desires and the differences between the two.  We can be so focused on reaching our goal that we can tend to knock whoever or whatever down to reach our goal because we want to be in control of reaching it.  Whereas desires are what we would like to have happen, but we have no control over if we reach them or accomplish them.  Another way to look at it is goals are closed fists and desires are open hands.

Here are some of my “desires” for the year 2022.

Continuing to learn and develop in my professional life with member care and nursing.  Developing trainings to equip others with preventative vs. reactive care and practical ways that will help.  Spending time with family.  Building community where I am currently living.  Continuing to grow and mature in my walk and relationship with Jesus.  Taking time to have fun and play, those things that bring me joy and delight.  If possible, I would love to do some traveling whether it is ministry related, family/friends related, supporter related, learning related, or just fun related.

The first couple of weeks in January I had the privilege of babysitting mostly my one nephew, Theo because of being exposed to covid.  It is usually fun babysitting my nieces and nephews, along with a host of many other kids since I was thirteen years old because kids have such imaginations and say things like it is literally.  My sister asked if I would help Theo with some “school-like” things since he was missing a lot of school.  If you know me, doing anything academically, even helping with homework I can feel the heat rising in me and the pressure building to where I have little to no patience.  There is a lot behind that story but for another time.  I said that I would help with “school” work.

Superhero HQ

Let’s just say that the first day went according to how I knew it would with both of us getting frustrated and mad.  So, I decided to go a different route since he was missing out on this occupational therapy (OT) sessions as well.  I did a little research and the rest of our time together we did activities to help with his fine motor skills—developing strength in his fingers and some on dexterity.  There were a few butting heads but not like the one day.  I told my sister that I believe I created a cotton ball game monster as that is all he wanted to play when we were doing “school” and when not in “class” he wanted to play with his superheroes and the “building” or HQ for his superheroes out of straws and connectors.  It reminded me of all the times I have played Barbies with three of my nieces.  Very imaginative.  Loads of fun.  But tiring.

God gave me a glimpse into seeing how he created our bodies and the need we have for fine motor skills and when they are not developed well how our bodies can compensate for the lack thereof.  It just fascinates me of how awe inspiring our Creator God is down to the very minute detail.  I was just grateful for the unexpected and being blessed as well as being a blessing.

“I was there, close to the Creator’s side as his master artist.
Daily he was filled with delight in me
as I playfully rejoiced before him.
I laughed and played,
so happy with what he had made,
while finding my delight in the children of men.”

Proverbs 8:30-31

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Camp News! Cherry Run Camp is my green pasture and quiet waters where the Lord continuously restores my soul.  This camp was even more special as I was invited to be the missionary in residence for the nine days of camp. Sharing with all age groups about missions and how as believers and followers of Christ we are all called to go and make disciples by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. It was a week that was fulfilling to be with my family and the family of God as we fellowshipped one with another. As missionaries, we first need to make connections and build relationships with people before sharing the Good News. The youth were given the mission to level up: 1) make connection by introducing themselves to people and making them feel welcomed; 2) ask the person what they need prayer for; 3) the youth to pray with the person on the spot; 4) the youth to share their testimony; and 5) the person is asked to share their testimony.  The yo...

SHANNON’S CORNER I will be joining my team with Refresh & Resound International as we will be in Penang, Malaysia.  Some of the team will be doing worship and the rest of us will be providing care and prayer for the spiritual leaders’ retreat and conference for around 220 global workers who work in translating the Scriptures in SE Asia.  Please be in prayer for my team as well as for everyone at these events.  I will share with you more next month so stay tuned. I have so enjoyed the slower pace this month and the opportunity to finish all of my nursing continuing education classes as well as some life coaching continuing education.  The slower pace has also given me time to be able to pause and reflect on this past summer and check-in with myself.  There have been some things that surfaced to the top of some transition losses that I needed to acknowledge, process, and grieve them.  God gently reminding me that I am still in the season of re-entr...
