SHANNON’S CORNER
November 2018

Muchas gracias!
Leading up to the retreat I just felt like Satan was attacking our group of missionaries as a
Worship
number of things hit us. Thank you for allyour prayers for our missionary retreat we had at the beginning of November!  It was a weekend full of many wonderful things. There were a few when they heard that we were going to be going to a rustic camp and in Monte Plata, which is both far for many and one of our hotter places on the island that they were not quite looking forward to the weekend.  I was really excited about the program Vic, Leslie and I had planned for everyone.  But I do have to say that as we got off the main road and
turned onto a dirt road, it felt like we were going deeper and deeper into the forest and went down one hill to cross through the river and go up the next hill that even I had my doubts.  Then we pulled into the camp where our children in Monte Plata have their summer camp and it was beautiful.  Surrounded by nature.  It reminded me somewhat of both Seneca Hills back when I was a camper and Cherry Run Camp except without all the foliage.  We slept in cabins and there was a central bathhouse and the building where we ate, hung out and held our meetings.  The river ran by the camp and in my cabin, I could hear the river flowing.

Small Groups
It was really a beautiful setting for our time of retreat together.  God planned this setting because we did have another place reserved where we have been having our retreats since I came two years ago.  But that place told us that they needed our reserved spot for one of their activities that they were having the same weekend.  God gave us beautiful weather during our weekend retreat with it not being overly hot and humid.  There was also not many mosquitos and bugs but some did see some tarantulas.  Even though it did rain on Sunday and we were a little concerned about crossing the river and getting up the hill on the other side…God kept us all safe and protected each of us and our vehicles as we made the trek out of the camp and later on the way back to our homes.

The setting was a time to get a way from all the distractions of the world.  It was a time of
The Toddlers
fellowship.  It was a time of worshipping our Lord together in song, in testimony, and in His Word.   It was a time of sharing what is happening in our ministry.  It was a time of sharing ideas to improve different aspects regarding our ministry.  It was a time of good food.  It was a time of reflection and prayer.  It was a time of fun.  It was a time of being in nature with our Creator God.

Teens/School-Age Crafts
God provided us with two amazing women from the KAI International Office who stepped up to help us with childcare.  A few days before the women left the USA to come we found out the person we had asked to work with our teens had backed out. We sent an S.O.S. to these amazing ladies to see if they would be interested in helping with our teens as well? One agreed to help with the teens while the other one was willing to help with our little ones.  Again, God’s hand was all over the planning of this retreat.

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the schemes…
…so that when the day of evil comes,
you may be able to stand your ground,
and after you have done everything to stand.
Stand firm…”
Ephesians 6:11, 13, 14a

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Winter Blast… Brr. It’s cold outside.  Winter is not a favorite season for many people, but I love winter. There is a beauty in the dormant, snow covered, and coldness of winter that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our bones.  It reminds me of the Lord’s love that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our heart and soul.  The snow brings a smile to my face as I delight in the quietness, calming, beautifying, and a slower pace.  Recently, I was talking with someone in Louisiana who was going to be making a snowman and snow angel with his granddaughter.  What playfulness and awe to experience the Lord’s beauty. Community is so important to our lives that even the Lord noticed how alone Adam was in the garden that He made Eve.  It is where you are seen, known, and find belonging.  It has been something I have prayed for, asked you all to be praying for, have sought after in ...

SHANNON’S CORNER Connect. Nurture. Grow. An unexpected and unplanned trip led me to see God’s marvelous and wonderful work at the Assist Pregnancy Center. I learned from the staff that this pregnancy center is unique and different in that the population they serve are women who come already with an 85-90% decision made of aborting their babies. The medical staff who are in the rooms with the women during their ultrasounds share Jesus with them and are compassionate witnesses to each baby as they are seen, valued, and loved. If the mother decides to have the baby the center walks alongside with the mother and family. I had the precious privilege to facilitate a training with all the staff of the pregnancy center to talk about the Wounds from the Work.  Listening to their stories of how the Lord called them to work at this pregnancy center and what the cost has been to them, and their families was sacred ground.  Creating a safe place for them to be seen and heard in thei...
