SHANNON’S CORNER

January 2017

I got to participate in a new tradition here in the Dominican Republic.  January 6th they celebrate Kings’ Day, (Dia de Reyes), the day the Wisemen came to celebrate the birth of Jesus and giving him three gifts.  Us missionaries in Jarabacoa made pancakes and salami for the children and staff at the Ark Children’s Home in Jarabacoa.  We had a small devotion after breakfast led by the home director and then everyone received three gifts.  These gifts are their Christmas gifts.  Later, I got to celebrate with our children and staff at the Ark Children’s Home in Constanza.  One of the house dads led the devotional prior to everyone receiving and opening their three gifts.  It was such a delight and joy to see them all open their gifts and the surprise, wonder, and laughter as they unwrapped their gifts and tried out or played with their gifts

My women’s Bible study started back up as we are continuing our study on the book, “Inside Out” by Dr. Larry Crabb.  We recently have been studying what it means to be thirsty for God, satisfying our thirst in Jesus (Jn. 7:37-38).  I have really enjoyed getting to deepen my relationships with the three other women in my study and hearing how God is working in their lives.  I have started to attend the Women’s Bible Study at my church.  I am really looking forward to it as a way to develop some Dominican friendships as well as some of our house moms attend so continuing to build relationships with them.  They started a book called, “Divine Design” by Mary A. Kassian & Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

This month of January we are welcoming the arrival of our first of many new Kids Alive missionaries who will be joining our Dominican family throughout the year.  Looking forward to meeting Apollo and Nancy face-to-face as I have been in contact with them via email and Facebook.  This couple will be serving in our Santo Domingo sites helping with child sponsorship and starting an AWANA club at both of our sites.

These last few weeks, talking with a good number of our missionaries to see how their Christmas break went and to hear how some of them are transitioning back to the DR for those who went back to the states, as well as transitioning back into doing ministry from being on break.  Some the transition has been smooth and others have been struggling a little in being back.  We had a few who came back from break sick as well.

There will be many things going on here in the next few weeks and even months.  The last weekend of January we have a women’s retreat for all our KAI missionaries here.  Helping Apollo and Nancy as the transition into living here in the DR.  Orienting them to KAI here in the DR with their roles in ministry and the directors, helping them in any way with finding housing, purchasing a vehicle, furniture, appliances, etc. as they set-up their home here.  Continuing in building relationships with both my fellow missionaries and our Dominican staff.  Organizing and planning for our next new missionary family to arrive early March.  Planning our directors’ retreat in May.  Hosting a number of teams.

God is good all the time.  All the time God is good.

SHANNON’S CORNER Winter Blast… Brr. It’s cold outside.  Winter is not a favorite season for many people, but I love winter. There is a beauty in the dormant, snow covered, and coldness of winter that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our bones.  It reminds me of the Lord’s love that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our heart and soul.  The snow brings a smile to my face as I delight in the quietness, calming, beautifying, and a slower pace.  Recently, I was talking with someone in Louisiana who was going to be making a snowman and snow angel with his granddaughter.  What playfulness and awe to experience the Lord’s beauty. Community is so important to our lives that even the Lord noticed how alone Adam was in the garden that He made Eve.  It is where you are seen, known, and find belonging.  It has been something I have prayed for, asked you all to be praying for, have sought after in ...

SHANNON’S CORNER Connect. Nurture. Grow. An unexpected and unplanned trip led me to see God’s marvelous and wonderful work at the Assist Pregnancy Center. I learned from the staff that this pregnancy center is unique and different in that the population they serve are women who come already with an 85-90% decision made of aborting their babies. The medical staff who are in the rooms with the women during their ultrasounds share Jesus with them and are compassionate witnesses to each baby as they are seen, valued, and loved. If the mother decides to have the baby the center walks alongside with the mother and family. I had the precious privilege to facilitate a training with all the staff of the pregnancy center to talk about the Wounds from the Work.  Listening to their stories of how the Lord called them to work at this pregnancy center and what the cost has been to them, and their families was sacred ground.  Creating a safe place for them to be seen and heard in thei...

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...
