SHANNON’S CORNER
July 2016
The last two weeks of our
summer program has been great! We had
all 17 of our interns back in Jarabacoa to celebrate the 4th of July
together. It was a fun weekend with fun
activities such as hiking to a waterfall, running a maratón (race) with the
kids from the Ark Children’s Home and finished with a BBQ. It was such a blessing to hear as everyone
shared a struggle they have faced, a surprise they have had, and any prayer
requests. Many of our interns shared
that their struggle was also where they found their surprise—an “Ah-ha” moment
with God.
Some of my favorite things that I have done this summer are building
relationships with our interns and some of our missionaries. I enjoy listening to people’s stories and how
God is working in their lives. I enjoy
listening to their struggles which there have been some conflicts between some,
yet how they are looking and searching for God to lead and direct them. I’ve enjoyed praying with them and
encouraging them along the way.
One of the groups that I have gotten to know quite a bit has been our
three medical interns since I would hang out with them most days and help them
out where ever needed such as doing vaccines, heights, weights, vision, vitals,
putting charts together, and helping with classroom management as they teach
health class. Every morning we would have
a time of devotional which we have been reading, “Fearfully and Wonderfully
Made,” by Dr. Paul Brand and Phillip Yancey.
It’s amazing to be able to discuss how God designed our bodies and relate
it to the Body of Christ.
The
other group of interns whom I have been able to get to know better are the
three women who are serving in our mountainous school and children’s home in
Constanza. Every Wednesday evening I
hang out with them. We eat dinner
together and have a time of devotions and prayer. My last trip there the ladies took me out in
the town as we went to the grocery store and the park. It was just really good to see things through
their eyes and what they have experienced.
God has given me some opportunities where I have had some one-on-one
time with a handful of our missionaries in starting to know them
personally. Building relationships takes
time but I have been very thankful for the start that God has given me in the
short time that I have been living in the Dominican.
Now God is
giving me the opportunity to learn with Center for Intercultural Training which
helps to train and equip missionaries to live overseas. Thankful for this time to learn and be
equipped myself but also being able to reinforce and build upon with our
missionaries throughout their time of service.
PRAYER REQUESTS
Praise
the summer programs went well with all our summer interns!
Praise the Lord watching and protecting me as
I travelled the island.
Pray
for my time at the Center for Intercultural Training (CIT) these next 5 weeks
(July 17th-Aug. 26th).
Pray
that I will be open, receptive, learn new things, networking with fellow
missionaries at CIT.
Pray
for wisdom and discernment as God guides me in building relationships with my
fellow KAI missionaries.
Pray
for our direction as I help to organize and facilitate our Missionary Retreat
in October.
