SHANNON’S CORNER

Connect. Nurture. Grow.

I am always learning and growing because one of my core values is stewardship.  This is why I have decided to invest in my skills as a communicator, in raising support by getting around other missionaries and other leaders with being a part of Fully Funded Academy.

I am excited to share with you a newly created platform with the hope to serve you through creating a space where you are able to engage and be more integrated into our ministry.  This platform is a private group on Facebook called, Shannon’s Support Team.  I will be sending out a separate email that will have the link to join.  If you do not receive the link or have any issues, please reach out to me.

There were six ladies who participated in the Velvet Ashes Connection Group and who are serving in various countries in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Rim.  Why did you join a connection group?  “I am looking forward to having a place for meaningful conversations and some laughter hopefully!”  Some of the themes we discussed were connecting, creativity, casting your cares, compass, and courage, where we shared how we are doing in these areas of our lives.  As we wrapped up our time we asked, how has these eight weeks been for you?  “Ladies, this group really helped me to feel more connected and understood and less lonely. That was such a timely treasure from my heavenly Father...so thank you for sharing your lives, your highs and lows.”

A five-week class on filial therapy which is teaching parents how to have special play time to develop the executive functioning (the part of the brain where you make decisions and experience consequences of that decision) of the child and naturally strengthens secure attachment, thus the child building trust and confidence.  This special play time creates space the child’s heart need to heal like when we are sick our body needs water and rest to heal.  The reason I took this class was to learn some skills to help with the young TCKs who I debrief and to have a resource that I could recommend to parents. The three main core skills we learned 1) structure to tagalong, 2) first respond with empathy, and 3) setting limits and letting the child decide.  The hardest part for me was not wanting to give praise, to step right in and help or give direction.  It was also hard to just state what I observed the child doing (empathy).  Learning some different stages of play and what various toys are used in those stages will be helpful along with the three main core skills that I learned.  I will need to adapt it for a debrief setting but believe this will be a good tool for my TCKs aged 3-10 years.  I am looking forward to trying it with the family I will be debriefing the beginning of June.

Thankful for how the Lord worked in the family who I had the privilege to finish their debrief before they head back to their country of service.  Using the 5 R’s of Transition to guide our time as they processed their furlough and thinking through what moving back will be for them. The 5 R’s are Roles, Routines, Relationships, Reactions, and Reflections.  Being able to identify where they each are in their journey of grief as they had some major losses.  We ended our time together with them drawing and sharing their river of transition.  Each river was different.  Their “transportation” was different.  Those who they had with them in their transition, some were the same, and some different.  It shows us that even as a family, each member is impacted differently as each one is unique and our own person.

The Lord provided the opportunity to share at the Women’s Appreciation Breakfast at Dayton in the morning and later to share at the Mother & Daughter Banquet at Brookville.  We are the vessels the Lord uses to carry His good news.  Most often we are the ordinary, plain clay pots.  Our lives can feel hard pressed, perplexed, unsure of what to do, persecuted, struck down, or knocked down.  I had several ladies break a clay pot with a hammer and to notice what we heard.  Shattering.  Tinkling.  They saw the after-effects of the hammer.  Described what they saw.  Brokenness.  Sharp and jagged edges.  Pieces.  Dust.  Yet in the ashes and destruction, Jesus redeems, beautifies, and restores us as his intent for us is wholeness.  Now seeing a pot put back together with glue and gold paint.  Yes, there are holes and cracks but the light of Jesus shines out through them in marvelous beauty.

The finish line is in sight.  I still need $1,100 to reach my budget of $45,000.

Life Transition Coaching with Shannon:

Change is a constant in today’s fast-paced world, and many people seek coaching to help them navigate these transitions, whether it’s receiving a new diagnosis, finding a new career, adjusting to life as a new caregiver, or transitioning to a new location.  As a coach, I am uniquely positioned to assist clients in navigating both big and small changes in their personal and professional lives.  Coaching is a new skill that I am learning and recently have been reminded the importance of practicing.  So, I am looking for anyone who would be willing to set aside 50 minutes to meet with me on zoom or by phone.  If you are interested, email me, text me, or Facebook message me.

The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Camp News! Cherry Run Camp is my green pasture and quiet waters where the Lord continuously restores my soul.  This camp was even more special as I was invited to be the missionary in residence for the nine days of camp. Sharing with all age groups about missions and how as believers and followers of Christ we are all called to go and make disciples by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. It was a week that was fulfilling to be with my family and the family of God as we fellowshipped one with another. As missionaries, we first need to make connections and build relationships with people before sharing the Good News. The youth were given the mission to level up: 1) make connection by introducing themselves to people and making them feel welcomed; 2) ask the person what they need prayer for; 3) the youth to pray with the person on the spot; 4) the youth to share their testimony; and 5) the person is asked to share their testimony.  The yo...

SHANNON’S CORNER Winter Blast… Brr. It’s cold outside.  Winter is not a favorite season for many people, but I love winter. There is a beauty in the dormant, snow covered, and coldness of winter that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our bones.  It reminds me of the Lord’s love that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our heart and soul.  The snow brings a smile to my face as I delight in the quietness, calming, beautifying, and a slower pace.  Recently, I was talking with someone in Louisiana who was going to be making a snowman and snow angel with his granddaughter.  What playfulness and awe to experience the Lord’s beauty. Community is so important to our lives that even the Lord noticed how alone Adam was in the garden that He made Eve.  It is where you are seen, known, and find belonging.  It has been something I have prayed for, asked you all to be praying for, have sought after in ...
