 SHANNON’S CORNER

Connect. Nurture. Grow.

An unexpected and unplanned trip led me to see God’s marvelous and wonderful work at the Assist Pregnancy Center. I learned from the staff that this pregnancy center is unique and different in that the population they serve are women who come already with an 85-90% decision made of aborting their babies. The medical staff who are in the rooms with the women during their ultrasounds share Jesus with them and are compassionate witnesses to each baby as they are seen, valued, and loved. If the mother decides to have the baby the center walks alongside with the mother and family.

I had the precious privilege to facilitate a training with all the staff of the pregnancy center to talk about the Wounds from the Work.  Listening to their stories of how the Lord called them to work at this pregnancy center and what the cost has been to them, and their families was sacred ground.  Creating a safe place for them to be seen and heard in their struggles and pain allowed them to receive encouragement from Jesus in how he modeled to us in the throws and demands of ministry, lifegiving rhythms such as going to lonely places to connect with the Father, taking time to grieve the losses, sometimes movement, lamenting, and sharing his distress with his three disciples.

A fun fact: one of the nurses I met is from Arequipa, Peru and she knows some of my teachers from the language school where I studied.

During my drive down to the pregnancy center, my engine light came on that caused me to be flustered as I was in stop and go traffic on I 495 and not sure how long it would take to get to my hotel.  I started praying for God to let me arrive to the hotel safely.  I later learned that at the Auto Zone store, they can check the engine light to know what code was triggered.  Praise the Lord!  There was an Auto Zone located five minutes from the hotel and I had time before needing to be at the pregnancy center about 10 minutes away.  The Auto Zone employee checked my light, and the code was reading a sensor problem and assured me that I would be safe to drive it back to PA.  I scheduled a visit with my mechanic for when I got back to check the check engine light and do 115,000 miles maintenance.  My mechanic wanted me to try it one more time after he reset it before putting money in for a sensor.  A few days later the light came on when I drove to Hershey, so I scheduled for the mechanic to see the car again.  The mechanic did more investigating, and the vacuum hose was torn on the end which was causing the sensor to go off because of so much air passing the sensor.  He put some electric tape around the tear and the car is running well.  So grateful for the Lord’s protection, safety, and provision with my car.  His goodness and faithfulness.

We did a family debrief and I had the privilege of working with a seven-year-old boy who has been living a very nomadic life since he was 2 ½ years old between two countries – not really here nor really there.  The family is now in the process of settling in the USA to bring some stability and consistency to their young family.  What I enjoy doing with little TCKs is to help them regain using their voice, how they can express themselves; regain their power, making choices and having control; and having relationship, connection and belonging.  Through play this creates safety for them to share the hard things as play is creative, imaginative, and fun.  After Easter, I will be taking a five-week course to learn more about how to use play to help little TCKs process these hard things and big emotions.

Why we do what we do?

Bearing witness to ministry workers’ stories, empowers them to connect with God, themselves, and others in their circles of influence.  Tending to their needs: body, mind, and spirit, nourishes them and strengthens them for the race the Lord has for them to run. Coming alongside in their journey encourages and equips them to grow and develop in community as we were not meant to do this alone.  Will you join me to connect, nurture, and grow ministry workers?

SHANNON’S CORNER The Saga Continues… The trip to Malaysia consisted of a two-day spiritual retreat with the theme of ‘Come Away With Me’ and a six-day conference with about 230 missionaries who serve in some aspect of translating the Scriptures. One of the many people who I met was a missionary who served in Cameroon for many years and now is in a new role. As he was sharing, most his words were very negative and depressive. I encouraged him to sign up for a time of prayer and care. At the end of the retreat, this missionary shared with me that he did have a session and I could see that his whole countenance changed, and he was hopeful. His new word he used to describe where he was now is ‘delightful.’ Our time there was creating a safe space for these missionaries to have a place to share what they are struggling with and to connect with Jesus. One missionary is at a crossroads in her life. Another finds himself in the midst of betrayal. A missionary is in a new role as a caregi...

SHANNON’S CORNER Camp News! Cherry Run Camp is my green pasture and quiet waters where the Lord continuously restores my soul.  This camp was even more special as I was invited to be the missionary in residence for the nine days of camp. Sharing with all age groups about missions and how as believers and followers of Christ we are all called to go and make disciples by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. It was a week that was fulfilling to be with my family and the family of God as we fellowshipped one with another. As missionaries, we first need to make connections and build relationships with people before sharing the Good News. The youth were given the mission to level up: 1) make connection by introducing themselves to people and making them feel welcomed; 2) ask the person what they need prayer for; 3) the youth to pray with the person on the spot; 4) the youth to share their testimony; and 5) the person is asked to share their testimony.  The yo...

SHANNON’S CORNER Winter Blast… Brr. It’s cold outside.  Winter is not a favorite season for many people, but I love winter. There is a beauty in the dormant, snow covered, and coldness of winter that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our bones.  It reminds me of the Lord’s love that embraces and permeates us to the depths of our heart and soul.  The snow brings a smile to my face as I delight in the quietness, calming, beautifying, and a slower pace.  Recently, I was talking with someone in Louisiana who was going to be making a snowman and snow angel with his granddaughter.  What playfulness and awe to experience the Lord’s beauty. Community is so important to our lives that even the Lord noticed how alone Adam was in the garden that He made Eve.  It is where you are seen, known, and find belonging.  It has been something I have prayed for, asked you all to be praying for, have sought after in ...
